Filtration in desalination: Gravity vs Pressure

How choices in pre-treatment shape performance, footprint, and CAPEX-OPEX in Reverse Osmosis plants.

Everyone says desalination problems are solved with good pre-treatment.

And everyone says most desalination issues are actually the result of poorly designed or underperforming pre-treatment.

So as you can imagine, we must talk about this :)

In previous episodes, we saw that today’s desalination business is essentially built around a membrane system, with a pre-treatment stage upstream to properly feed and protect that membrane.

Today we focus on one of the most important pretreatment stages: filtration.

In practice, there are two main approaches here:

  1. gravity filtration

Each has its own advantages, drawbacks, and historical background, because over the years, every technology develops its own “tricks”.
